Dallas Dental Crowns

Strengthen & Support Weak Teeth

A dental crown is a cap that is fitted over the tooth to restore the shape, strength, and enhance the tooth’s appearance. At Skulman Dental, we offer crowns in Dallas to restore the function, integrity, and appearance of a weak or damaged tooth. Generally, crowns are not used only for cosmetic reasons, but for teeth that have had prior repairs.

When a Crown May Be Needed

Because a crown covers the tooth, the procedure has cosmetic benefits. However, the main goal of using a crown is to provide support for a damaged or previously repaired tooth, such as a tooth with a large filling and not much natural tooth material left. Dental crowns fully cover the entire tooth, above the gumline. Crowns may be needed for a variety of reasons to support a weak or damaged tooth.

Some common reasons for using dental crowns include:
  • Protecting a weak or cracked tooth from breaking
  • Supporting a tooth with a large filling or root canal
  • Covering a broken or misshaped tooth
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Holding a bridge in place
  • Supporting a damaged baby tooth

Our dentists have extensive training and more than 32 years of experience providing crowns in Dallas for our patients. You can rest assured that we always put the needs and best interests of our patients first. If your examination shows that a crown is the best procedure to strengthen a weak or damaged tooth, we will recommend the treatment and provide the highest quality care.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are made from a variety of materials. Temporary crowns, which are made at your dentist’s office to wear until your permanent crown is made, are usually crafted of an acrylic material or stainless steel. Permanent crowns can be made with porcelain, gold, stainless steel, resin, or porcelain fused to metal.

There are advantages or disadvantages to each type of material. The right type of crown depends on several factors, such as the location of the tooth, the function of the tooth, the amount of natural tooth remaining, and how much of it will show when you are talking or smiling. If you need a dental crown, we can explain your options for crowns in Dallas and determine the ideal material for your crown.

The Procedure

Dental crowns usually require two visits to the office. On the first visit, the tooth will be reshaped to make room for the crown and fillings may be used to build up a decayed tooth. An impression will be made of the tooth, which is used to make the crown and ensure that it fits properly. You may be given a temporary crown to wear until your permanent one can be made.

During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the new permanent crown to ensure that it fits properly, and the color is right for porcelain crowns that are made to match your natural teeth. You will be given a local anesthetic and the crown will be cemented in place. Dental crowns can last for up to 15 years with proper care and good oral hygiene.
