Root Canals

Dallas Root Canals

More Than Three Decades of Experience

Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria and save the natural tooth. While root canal has a bad reputation, the process is easily handled by an experienced professional with the right training. The dental specialists at Skulman Dental have performed root canals in Dallas since 1987. We treat our patients with respect and work to build a connection with our patients to properly care for their dental health needs.

When a Root Canal is Needed

When an infection or inflammation reaches the inside of the tooth, known as the pulp, a root canal may be needed. Root canal treatment may be recommended for a number of reasons. Some of the most common reasons for a root canal include a deep cavity, problems with a tooth that has a prior filling, or an injury to the tooth. Often, patients experience tooth sensitivity, but there are several other indications that a root canal may be needed.

You may need a root canal, if you have:
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Severe and deep decay in a tooth
  • Severe pain when eating
  • A tooth that is cracked or chipped
  • Pain or swelling in the gums near the affected tooth

Our dentists have more than three decades of experience with root canals in Dallas. Our patients are cared for by dental industry experts and a friendly staff in a comfortable environment. We understand that dental procedures make patients anxious and work to create a relaxing environment and provide compassionate care that is customized to the needs of the individual patient.

Reasons to Save the Natural Tooth

One of the biggest benefits of root canals in Dallas is the ability to preserve the natural tooth. This procedure enables us to save teeth that may otherwise need to be extracted, which helps our patients avoid unnecessary tooth loss. While most people want to avoid tooth loss for cosmetic reasons, we make every effort to preserve your natural teeth for several reasons.

Saving your natural tooth allows you to enjoy normal function for biting, chewing, and speaking. In addition, tooth loss can cause problems for the remaining teeth. Missing teeth put additional strain on the surrounding teeth and can result in those teeth shifting position. Restoring your own natural tooth benefits your overall oral health.

The Root Canal Procedure

The root canal procedure involves removing the infected pulp from the tooth. After the pulp is completely removed, the dentist will clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth. The last step is to fill and seal the area. After the root canal procedure, the tooth will be restored with a filling. Often, a crown will be used to cover the tooth to strengthen and protect it.

If you need a root canal, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. When left untreated, infection in the pulp can lead to an abscess and tooth extraction may become necessary. We use a local anesthetic to help minimize discomfort during the procedure and most patients experience only slight discomfort or none at all.
